Reclaimed Leather Barrette

The Origin of Artifact 001

Today I created something small, but important.

This piece began as a reclaimed leather patch removed from a luxury handbag during the process of salvaging usable materials. The leather itself offered the perfect weight and structure for experimentation, giving me an opportunity to practice hand stitching, hole punching, reinforcement techniques, and construction methods that I intend to continue refining over time.

Rather than discarding beautiful materials simply because they have reached the end of their original purpose, I am interested in discovering what they can become next.

For this prototype, I created a small reversible barrette. One side features reclaimed leather, while the interior is reinforced with canvas backing for added structure and durability. The closure pin was handcrafted from a simple chopstick I had on hand, serving as both a functional component and a reminder that thoughtful design often begins with available materials and imagination rather than expensive tools.

What excites me most is that this design is entirely repeatable.

This first piece represents more than a finished object. It represents process, experimentation, craftsmanship, and the beginning of an evolving design language centered around reclamation, utility, and intentional making.

At Ritual, I believe objects carry stories.

Sometimes the most interesting creations begin by giving forgotten materials a second life.

This is Artifact 001.

The beginning of something larger.
